I made some little spun cotton bunnies last year and gave them all away. I should make some more! I absolutely cant wait to see what yours look like when finished!

OMGosh Flora, you just continually amaze me, which is actually hard to do. I will be waiting on pins and needles to see your finished work tomorrow. I am so jealous of your time and physical ability to craft. I rely so much on how the weather is, and if I've overdone in some other area, which can really cut in to my ability to craft. At least I'll always have artists like you to keep me inspired.
Big Hugs,
Meri
so interesting to see this process...first time I have seen how someone does this...thanks. Susan

I'm loving your spun cotton designs :) And am just curious if it is like needle felting only paintable? or do you not use felting needles at all? Of course i won't mind if you dont want to share all of your secrets :)
Megan
Hello and Welcome Megan, no secret really or maybe the secret is that you just have to do it cause no matter how many times someone explained it to me I wasn't able to grasp it until I just did it? It's definitely not like needle felting although it does look similar. You coat the item with watered down glue or food based starch binder, like corn starch, after you get the design you want , different people use different bases, I used foam core and wire, then applied the cotton and " painted " the binder over it then painted it with acrylics.Good luck!!!

That sounds cool. Thanks for the tips! I had never heard about needing to use a binder- that is good to know. So did you make the details in it (like how the eyes are indented and such) before or after you painted on the binder? Or maybe you keep adding on layers of detail after the basic shape is formed and add the binder to make the layers stick? Thanks again for your help!
Megan
Oh yes otherwise the cotton fiber would not stay in place.Yes again, the binder/adhesive is used to adhere the layers and the details are added on much as you would add clay, kept in place with the binder. You are very welcomed!!

Thanks so much! I really appreciate all of your help :) I hope I'm not too annoying but I just thought of one other question (this is the last one- promise!!) I have heard of some people using cotton batting while other people say they use cotton roving.. have you tried both? and if so which is easiest? Thanks so much. I owe you :)
No problem Megan, I enjoy the questions and hope you will pass on the help when someone asks you for help too? I myself use non sterile medical grade cotton and simple unrolled cotton balls.I will be getting the roving to see if there is a difference in the end product. You are very welcomed!!!
Blessings,Flora
Thanks so much for all of your help, Flora! You are too awesome :) I like your cotton ball idea - hadn't thought of that before! And yes, I will of course pass the knowledge along :) I'll send you a picture of what I end up making (after a little practice hehehe). Have a fun weekend!
Megan
Glad I could help Megan!!!Please do let me know how it goes, Take Care!!
